Protection
The idea for this particular theme was to take an example of a protective object, in this case a shell, and then make a garment out of it so as to envelop the wearer in a symbolic and literal notion of being protected.
This is not intended to be a fashion conscious piece, but merely a sculpture. The photographs seek to give a certain context to the piece, to bring to life, in a more vivid way the theme.
The shells were collected from Oyster Bars in London, where hundreds are consumed daily.
This piece also explores themes such as consumerism, disposability and recycling.
Mother, being the universal symbol of protection is seen in our very naming of the substance of the shell Mother of Pearl, which is the part of the shell in direct contact with the oyster when it’s alive, and also henceforth the body inside the garment.
